Chapter 1 — Twelve Years
Michael and Laura Bennett had been divorced for twelve years.
No affair ended the marriage.
No betrayal.
No scandal.
They simply became tired.
Work.
Bills.
Children.
Schedules.
Silence.
Eventually, they became excellent parents and terrible spouses.
When their daughter Hannah announced her wedding, both promised to behave.
Then Michael saw Laura at the rehearsal.
She looked older.
So did he.
Laura smiled.
“Hi.”
Michael nodded.
“Hi.”
It felt absurd that two people who had once shared everything could sound like strangers.
Chapter 2 — Wrong Assumptions
Michael believed Laura had someone new.
A man named Daniel kept appearing beside her.
Laura believed Michael had someone new too.
A woman named Susan traveled with his family.
Neither asked.
They were both wrong.
Daniel was Laura’s new boss.
Susan was Michael’s sister-in-law.
The misunderstanding lasted almost the entire weekend.
Their children noticed.
Hannah finally cornered them.
“You two are exhausting.”
Michael frowned.
Laura sighed.
Hannah pointed at both.
“You have spent twelve years assuming things instead of asking.”
Then she walked away.
Laura looked at Michael.
“That sounded familiar.”
He nodded.
“Very.”
Chapter 3 — What Broke
They sat outside after the rehearsal dinner.
For the first time in twelve years, they spoke honestly.
Laura had believed Michael always chose work first.
Michael had believed Laura stopped needing him.
Laura had waited for him to notice she was overwhelmed.
Michael had waited for her to say she wanted him home.
Neither did.
They became resentful.
Then distant.
Then polite.
Laura looked at him.
“We didn’t stop loving each other.”
Michael stared at her.
“No.”
He swallowed.
“We stopped telling each other that it mattered.”
Laura’s eyes filled.
The sentence hurt because it was true.
Chapter 4 — Too Late?
The timing was terrible.
Michael had accepted a job in Canada.
Laura had accepted one in California.
Both were leaving within months.
For once, neither pretended that love solved logistics.
They did not cancel anything immediately.
They did not make promises.
They simply agreed to talk.
Really talk.
After the wedding, they called every week.
Then every few days.
Then daily.
Six months later, Michael declined the Canada position.
Laura kept the California job.
Michael moved west the following year.
Not because Laura asked.
Because he wanted to.
Chapter 5 — Second Vows
They remarried three years after Hannah’s wedding.
Small ceremony.
No elaborate speeches.
Their daughter cried harder than either of them.
During the vows, Michael looked at Laura.
“I thought our first marriage failed because we stopped loving each other.”
Laura smiled.
“We know better now.”
They had not needed a second chance at the same marriage.
They needed the courage to build a different one.
This time, when something mattered—
they said it.
