Chapter 1 — Have We Met?
Every morning at 8:10, Ethan Cole met Dr. Rachel Moore for the first time.
At least to him.
The accident had damaged the part of his brain responsible for consolidating new memory.
He could remember childhood.
College.
His mother’s phone number.
The day before the crash.
But not yesterday.
Rachel walked into his rehabilitation room on day fourteen carrying coffee.
Ethan looked up.
“Have we met?”
Rachel smiled.
“Yesterday.”
“Was I nice?”
“Eventually.”
Ethan laughed.
“That sounds like me.”
Rachel had heard the conversation before.
Exactly three times.
But somehow, each version felt slightly different.
That bothered her.
Because she was beginning to look forward to it.
Chapter 2 — The Notebook
Ethan began keeping a notebook.
Every night, before sleep, he wrote down what mattered.
The first pages were practical.
You are at St. Matthew Rehabilitation Center.
Your sister visits Tuesdays and Thursdays.
Do not try to drive.
Then Rachel started appearing.
Dr. Moore hates hospital coffee but drinks it anyway.
Later:
Trust Rachel when she tells you something happened.
Then:
She laughs before she realizes she’s laughing.
Rachel found that one by accident.
She closed the notebook immediately.
“You shouldn’t write about me.”
Ethan frowned.
“Why?”
“Because I’m your doctor.”
“That seems like a weird reason.”
“It’s a very good reason.”
Ethan looked at her.
“Do I flirt with you every day?”
Rachel tried not to smile.
“Yes.”
“Does it work?”
“No.”
“Interesting.”
The next morning he asked:
“Have we met?”
And somehow—
they began again.
Chapter 3 — Day 187
Rachel requested a transfer.
She told herself it was ethical.
Professional.
Necessary.
But the truth was simpler.
She had fallen in love with a man who would wake tomorrow not remembering she had said goodbye.
On her final morning, Rachel entered without coffee.
Ethan noticed immediately.
“Bad day?”
Rachel paused.
“You don’t know me.”
He looked at the notebook on his lap.
“Apparently I do.”
Rachel sat.
“I’m leaving today.”
Ethan opened the notebook.
“Why?”
“Because this isn’t fair.”
“To who?”
“You.”
Ethan searched the most recent pages.
Rachel tried to stop him.
“Ethan—”
He found last night’s entry.
His handwriting.
Large.
Underlined.
IF RACHEL LEAVES TOMORROW, ASK HER TO STAY.
He stared at it.
Then at her.
Rachel’s eyes filled.
Ethan spoke carefully.
“I don’t remember loving you.”
Rachel looked away.
Ethan continued:
“But apparently I’ve chosen you one hundred eighty-seven days in a row.”
Rachel closed her eyes.
Ethan smiled faintly.
“That has to count for something.”
Chapter 4 — Tomorrow
Rachel did not stay as his doctor.
That part ended.
Months later, after Ethan transferred to another rehabilitation program, they met again.
Voluntarily.
No white coat.
No chart.
No professional obligation.
Rachel arrived at a coffee shop first.
Ethan walked in holding the same notebook.
He sat.
Looked at her.
“Have we met?”
Rachel’s heart sank.
Then Ethan smiled.
“I’m kidding.”
She hit his arm.
“That’s cruel.”
“I wrote it down.”
Rachel laughed.
Ethan opened the notebook.
A new page.
RACHEL MOORE.
Then beneath it:
If you forget everything else, ask her another question.
Rachel looked at him.
“What question?”
Ethan took a breath.
“Would you like to have dinner with me tomorrow?”
Rachel smiled.
“You won’t remember asking.”
Ethan nodded.
“No.”
Then he tapped the notebook.
“But I can choose again.”
Rachel reached across the table.
And sometimes love was not remembering the same person forever.
Sometimes it was finding them again—
every morning.
